Living on an island 9 miles long by five miles wide, means that all aspects of required infrastructure are within easy reach and visible distance, the airport, the marina, the incinerator, the fuel depot. In winter months, as I travel to and from work in the hours of darkness, I see how the artificial light temporarily transforms the brute, the functional, the necessary, into items of beauty.
Prior to this exercise I had never tried to capture these images, I had wanted to, but had never made the concerted effort. My first attempt, quite understandably and in hindsight, as could be expected, contained, some very rooky errors. The most important and basic of which, being that a tripod and patience is imperative. There were no shoots from this outing which I was happy with, which made me a tad despondent, feeling as though I lacked in capability. I had composed the images in my minds eye countless times when I had passed these locations, yet not only did I fail on capturing the beauty, I failed on the majority of occasions to even capture an in-focus, clear shot.
Over two months have since passed from that first outing, with renewed determination I pushed myself to try again, this time armed with my tripod. Whilst I still managed to fail on a number of occasions to get an in-focus, clear photo, I did succeed in capturing an essence of what I wanted.
This is something that is going to take practice and effort to learn and get right, however now I have had a whiff that I might be able to do it, I am encouraged, motiviated, I want to see if I can capture it.
