I considered which generic items does Jersey have a good selection of and after fields and hedgerows, beaches came to mind. I had seen an advert in the last few months, for a product I can't recall, in which the actor was laying on a sun lounger on a beach. However rather than face the sea, as everyone would do in reality, the sunlounger was facing away from the sea, so that the sea appeared in the background of the shot. This twisting of reality made me think as to what almost formalised concept this has become. If the sea is not shown in the background, that people will not automatically read this as a beach. This is borne out in the Google Images search, all of the images contained the sea prominently.

Personal Voice
I decided to take a series of images of the beach in which the sea did not form part of the composition. Thinking of the advert, with the sea at my back, what would have the actor on the sunlounger seen?
For each photo taken I also decided to turn 180 degrees and take the "classic" beach image. To highlight the variety shown in my images, against the almost continued standard genericness of the seascape. Alas it was not until I got home that I realised that my white balance had been set to tungsten, which resulted in the exposure of some images being off (either overexposed or underexposed) and some other images tinged with a blue hue. The importance of checking my settings/resetting the camera to neutral rammed home to me. Clearly this has had an impact on the quality/final outcome images, however I believe my concept still shines through.
Learning point: One my first review I had cropped some of the images to improve the composition and framing. However on uploading to here and putting them in a gallery of two, this has changed the proportions and in some cases has thrown the framing out, most obviously in set 7, where in image 1 the bottom right hand of the staircase has been cut off and set 12, where there is no space to the sides of image 1. Note to self, edit for the final format the image will be displayed!

One of the ways in which Jersey manages its waste is by incinerating it. The incinerator is located on one of the headlands, near the main town and by a beach popular with tourists. I had toyed with the idea of using it as the focus of this exercise, when people think of beaches, the image that pops into mind doesn't tend to include an industrial incinerator. However I prefered the concept I explored above much more.
As I was coming to the end of my walk along the beach taking the above images, I noticed that there were surfers walking out of the sea in front of the incinerator. It seemed like it was meant to be. Due to having the camera set to the wrong white balance, the image taken had an unpleasant blue hue, so to make it more aesthetically pleasing and useable, I changed the image to black and white.
